The Challenge
Located within the historic Waldrons Conservation Area, the project required a landscape design that respected the area’s distinctive character while meeting the Urban Greening Factor (UGF) and incorporating nature-based Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS). The site also had to accommodate multifunctional spaces for play and recreation, despite a narrow plot constrained by two six-storey buildings. Landscape interventions focused on three areas: the front gardens, the rear garden with a play area, and a tight passage connecting the two.
The Design Solution
Inspired by the historic meaning of Waldrons —“wild valley”—the rear garden design introduces a sculpted “mini valley,” using gentle landform variations to integrate SuDS features and a natural play area while following the site’s existing topography.
To humanise the tall, narrow space between the buildings, we introduced irregular planters with integrated seating and vertical greening to enrich views along the linear passage. Horizontal beams were added between façades to bring the space to a more comfortable scale and to support suspended lighting. Together, these elements create a more welcoming, functional, and visually engaging courtyard environment.
