Description:
The Challenge
This project represents a major expansion of Herne Bay’s residential landscape, introducing 180 new homes in a mix of two-storey detached and semi-detached houses, terraced homes, and four apartment blocks. From the outset, the local planning authority required that the scheme integrate generous green infrastructure and communal open spaces to promote wellbeing and a strong sense of community.
The challenge was to design a masterplan that delivered housing density efficiently while embedding a high-quality landscape framework — one that would not only meet planning expectations but also create an enduring connection between residents and the natural environment.
The Design Solution
Developed in close dialogue with local residents, stakeholders, and neighbouring development teams, the masterplan prioritises accessible communal green spaces at the heart of the scheme. Boundaries between private gardens and shared landscapes were intentionally softened, creating a sense of openness and inclusivity.
Extensive wildflower meadows and newly established wetland habitats form the backbone of the landscape strategy, enriching biodiversity and providing diverse opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and play. This approach ensures that the new neighbourhood supports healthy living, while fostering a collective identity shaped by the presence of nature woven throughout daily life.
